A blog is like any business in real world. Say you have a cafe which has the best coffee in the world. If no one knows about it then no one will even know that your coffee even exists! Some substandard cafe with second rate coffee will be known as the best and make all the profit in the world!
So as a blogger it is your responsibility to let the world know that the content you write exists and is ready for their judgement and perusal .
This is where marketing your blog comes in.
1) The Judgement
Take a step back and try reading your own content and ask yourself "Will i recommend this to someone if i did not write this?" If the answer to this is anything that is not a firm yes then that content is not worth your effort and time to market! If all else, you will only ruin your reputation by publicizing a substandard content!
Now that you have decided that you the quality of the post is good, put on a "I am the best" attitude (Please don't be obnoxious though). I mean if you dont believe that your post is the best in the world then why should the reader?
3) Know Your Competition
Always watch what the other blogs in your niche are posting. Do not miss out on any of the major events that happen. E.g. If you write about gadgets and tech, not having a post about the iPad release in at least a day or two of the release will make your user drift from your blog for information. Never EVER let them leave this way. Loyal followers are hard to get as it is, why let them go away?
4) Never Sell - Create Interest!
If I see a salesman I run for it, and that is how many of you also react. So never try to sell what you have create an interest in what you have. For E.g while commenting on another blog if you say "I have a post on iPad at goo.gl/E1MVX" it will be frowned upon and receive less attention than a comment which says "I also read that the iPad has a 10 hour long battery at goo.gl/E1MVX! Isn't 10 hours battery life with retina display just great?"
So always CREATE INTEREST - NEVER SELL!!
5) Shameless Advertisement
Never be scared to advertise your blog or product! After all it is the best product in your opinion! Then the bigger the stage the better is the opportunity! Never miss even the slightest opportunity to drop a mention about your blog or product.
6) Behave Professionally and Sound Like an Expert
An advantage of the internet is the wealth of information and that you can take some time to reply. Use these to your advantage! Always be sure that what you say is 100% true and always communicate in a professional manner. That means no to all the chat acronyms in your mail etc. The biggest thing you have to remember is to apologies for any of the mistake that you might do and not try to cover it up! These little gestures project you as an expert who knows what he/she is talking about!
7) Dedicate Time
When i began Random Rational i thought that posting everyday is absolutely necessary and that is the only way to get readers. Now i post once in 2 days. 1 day for research and exploring all the blogs out there and doing my "Shameless Advertisement Campaign of Random Rational" and the other day I write what the post i have researched on. This has not only reduced the load of writing a post every day, it allows me to give my readers in depth posts on the topics i write on and surprisingly i have not had a drop in my traffic! Rather it is steadily increasing!
